Barack Obama’s inauguration, Dear Sister revisited
Tuesday, January 20, 2009
Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States this morning. It’s exciting. It’s official. His speech was moving and hopeful. A new era of responsibility?
Obama said: “This is the price and the promise of citizenship. This is the source of our confidence – the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny. This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed . . .”
I thought: “This is . . . Sparta!” (and imagined Obama kicking the presidential podium over).
Without further ado, let’s resume our consumption of silly things. Yes we can?
These Choose Your Own Adventure shirts are cool. The tofu/horse/refrigerator character reminded me of Homestar Runner’s Marshie, for some reason, from the Fluffy Puff Marshmallows commercial.
While we’re being nostalgic about internet memes, I don’t think I’ve ever posted about the “Hide and Seek”/”Dear Sister” videos. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I suggest you take 15 minutes of your time and have a proper Imogen Heap experience. First, listen to “Hide and Seek,” one of the best songs from Imogen Heap’s 2005 album. Second, you must watch this terrible scene from “The OC” from like four years ago that uses the song. Third, you must watch the SNL Digital Short “Dear Sister” parody of that scene (yes, it involves Shia LaBeouf). Fourth, you owe it to yourself to explore the hundreds of follow-up YouTube parodies of the parody. Here are seven you shouldn’t miss: 300, Pirates of the Caribbean, Different Strokes, Duck Hunt, Tom Cruise Kills Oprah, The Matrix and Star Wars.
The Watchmen controversy is finally being resolved, after a lengthy and well-played marketing (whoops, I mean, legal) battle between Fox and Warner Brothers.
My Team Is Better Than Your Team is a nice useless college football site. Basically you choose two college football teams, and based on the scores of games it will try to prove that one team is better than the other using the transitive property. For example, it takes 19 transitions to prove that West Liberty State College is better than national champ Florida. It takes merely 17 transitions to prove that William Penn University is better than Penn State (as well as Portland State, Oregon State and USC in the process).
